Chapter Sixteen

Callum woke early, before the sun could chase away the mist that clung to the forest floor. He’d had trouble falling asleep, thinking about Lydia, the Sootfiend, and the bronze Dreamon. Every time he closed his eyes, he would see one of their faces, none of which he wanted to look upon. He still didn’t know if he could trust Lomen either, but he had to admit, the Joruskan’s story seemed to fit with what he and Lydia had uncovered about the cult. While he had never had an interest in politics or cared to read about the Crown or Council, there were enough inconsistencies to make him question everything they’d said about the Joruskan Isles. Lydia had asked him to stop the Slivers, but Callum didn’t even know where to find them, much less how stop them. He looked down at his hand, the one that had somehow cracked and absorbed the magic inside the Shatterstone. It had taken the power from the Sootfiend as well. Had guided him to Lydia. Why couldn’t he control it?

He grabbed Lydia’s sword to start his morning exercises. Part of him knew he would have to study the quicksilver sword, even use it, if he was ever going to understand how he made it. He doubted Lomen would welcome his study of it; after all, the Sootfiend had attacked and nearly killed him with a similar sword. But beyond that, Callum wanted to understand the pulses first. They were the underlying power behind whatever he had done. He fell into his stance, moving through each position quickly and then switching to his right hand to go through it again. The mist swirled away from his last strike, reminding him of the dark fog in the Dreamon realm, causing him to falter for a moment. He turned east, toward the horizon, willing the sun to rise faster. Kelter walked up next to him, yawning and stretching, looking up at him.

“I miss her too, Kelter,” he whispered. Callum knelt down, scratching the wolfdog’s neck, burying his face in his fur. “Go on.”

Kelter loped off slowly into the mist to look for breakfast. Callum wasn’t sure what he was going to do with the wolf when they reached Aurumount. He knew Kelter could take care of himself, Callum just didn’t want to lose him to the wild. A sliver of yellow light crept up over the horizon, spilling light across the forest. He turned away, walking back to the campsite. Kali had already flown off by the time he got back, but Lomen was still asleep.

“Lomen,” Callum said loudly. “We’re going to need to get moving soon.”

“Huh? Oh, right.” Lomen stood up slowly, stretching the sleep from his body. “I shall get ready quickly, friend Callum.” He gathered up his cloak, rolling it up and stuffing it into his unusual sling bag.

“I need to read through Lydia’s journal before we head out. I’d like to leave within the hour though.”

“What is it you are hoping to find?” Lomen asked as he started moving through a series of slow stretches.
